I believe that all students are unique and need a secure, caring, intellectually stimulating environment. As an educator I need to meet the needs of all of my students and this involves getting to know them and the backgrounds that they come from. I believe that students should be comfortable with their teacher and be able to go to him/her for help or whatever they need!
I believe that students should have multimodal forms of learning and should be actively engaged throughout the day. When students are provided with hands-on activities and allowed adequate time and space to use materials that reinforce the lesson being studied, it will create an outstanding opportunity for individual learning.
I also think that it is important for students to be able to relate to what they are learning and for them to be able to see how it is meaningful to their lives. When students are interested, they will be motivated and engaged.
I want my students to love the learning environment that they are in and have a voice in my classroom. I want students to feel comfortable with their classmates and comfortable enough to be able to express their thoughts and ideas. I hope that my students know my enthusiasm and love for teaching so that they can emulate the same feelings!
Framework This is a work in progress but I decided that I was going to design by framework as a layered cake. All of the layers of the cake make up the entire cake and I used Environment as the icing of the cake/top layer because I feel as though it is the most important. Classrooms need to be creative, relaxed, fun and safe. If a classroom does not have a successful environment, students will not succeed and will not feel comfortable. Within the classroom environment: A)Positive Relationships Teachers and students need to have strong relationships. If teachers do not know their students well and know the backgrounds that they come from, they will not be able to reach them and meet their needs. Teachers need to always develop positive relationships with the families of students.
-The communication between the student and the teacher serves as a connection between the two, which provides a better atmosphere for a classroom environment. Of course a teacher is not going to understand every problem for every child in his or her classroom, but will acquire enough information for those students who are struggling with specific tasks
B)Positive Attitudes If teachers have good attitudes, students will most likely be more positive. If students think that their teacher does not care about them and does not want them to succeed, then they will show a similar attitude. If teachers are enthusiastic about what they are teaching it will be more likely that students are interested and engaged. C) Planning All lessons and units are well planned, adapted depending on students succession, well thought out, creative, interesting, NEW, Collaborating with other teachers. -Allowing flexibility -Metacognition- is used to regulate thinking and learning. In order to regulate thinking and learning you must have the skills of planning, monitoring, and evaluating, all which involve knowledge. Teaching students how to think about their thinking is crucial.
D) Assessment and Reflection Making sure students are understanding the material and going back and teaching material again if it is not being learned. What went well? What can be changed? - Formative and Summative -Schools must have procedures for maintaining the confidentiality of school records. Testing practices must not discriminate against students from different cultural backgrounds.
Engagement and Motivation If students are engaged while they are learning, they will learn more. Students, especially young students cannot sit at a desk for a long period of time and expect to be successful. They need to be moving around and doing hands on activities. If they are motivated and hooked into what is going on, their attention will be able to be kept longer and they will be more likely to learn and want to learn.
High expectations Teachers should always set high expectations for their students. If you expect a lot from your students they will give a lot and if you expect a little, they will give you a little. Attitude affects effort. Expectations will be a factor in helping students learn and achieve. E) Clear and Consistent rules and procedures F)Clear Learning Goals G) Assertive behavior-Confident, Consistent, Fair
Acquisition and Application of Knowledge Teachers will always be learning and always bettering themselves to be better teachers. Always learning about the newest technologies and the newest literacies. They will know the subject that they will be teaching and multiple modes of that material. Lessons will always be adapted and changed in order to meet the needs of all students and all of their learning styles. Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences: An intelligence is the ability to solve problems and create products or outcomes that are valued by a culture. Varying cultures and eras of history place different values on the intelligences.
Robert Sterberg's Triarchich theory of successful intelligence- Intelligence is more about success in life. Analytic, creative and practical
All of these layers of the cake are crucial to a successful classroom and student's learning and success.Environment is the most important layer and most of my topics can fit under environment.
